Rehabilitation is an important part of the recovery process for a patient with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The overall goal of TBI rehabilitation is to improve the patient's ability to function at home and in the community.

During the acute phase, patients with moderate to severe injuries can receive treatment and care in the hospital's intensive care unit. After stabilization, the patient may be transferred to the emergency department of the medical center or to an independent rehabilitation hospital. At this stage, patients take different paths to recovery because there are many options for rehabilitation.

It is important for the family to provide social support to the patient by participating in the rehabilitation program. Family members can benefit from psychotherapy. Therapists help the patient adapt to the disability or change the patient's living space, called environmental modification, to make daily activities easier.
It is important for TBI patients and their families to choose the most appropriate conditions for rehabilitation. There are several options, including rehabilitation at home, outpatient rehabilitation in hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation centers, comprehensive day programs in rehabilitation centers, assisted living programs, independent living centers, club programs, school programs for children, and others.

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (News Service, Jan. 30, 2007) - Thanks to the generosity of 600,000 Americans, wounded warriors now have a state-of-the-art $50 million physical rehabilitation center.

The Fearless Center, designed for service members wounded during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, opened here yesterday along with two new fisherman's houses during a ceremony attended by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Gen. Peter Pace, Under Secretary of Defense Gordon England, and Secretary Francis J. Harvey. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary R. James Nicholson also spoke at the ceremony.
"There are those who say of (wounded warriors) today, 'He lost an arm. He lost his leg. She lost her sight." I object,” Pace told the wounded servicemen. "You gave a hand, you gave a leg, you gave your sight as a gift to your people so that we could live freely."
The $50 million center was built entirely with private funding through the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides assistance to military heroes injured in the line of duty and their families.
"This is a momentous day for this country and for the 600,000 Americans who have donated a dollar, some over a million dollars, to make sure that our young men and women who have done so much for this country know that Americans care about them." - said Arnold Fisher, chairman of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Foundation. "They are our national treasure."
The Defence And National Rehabilitation Centre
Both the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Foundation and the Fisher House Foundation, which makes the Fisher Houses possible, are participants in the Department of Defense's America Supports You program. The program aims to show how Americans support America's military, veterans and their families.
At the grand opening, more than 3,000 guests were joined by dozens of wounded soldiers. The guest list included Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain, country group Big & Rich, Rosie O'Donnell, Michelle Pfeiffer, producer David E. Kelly and top military leaders from all branches of the military. Rock star John Mellencamp performed at the ceremony.
Although the audience was filled with top military leaders and Hollywood celebrities, the wounded warriors received the longest ovation, as well as a standing ovation.
"It's amazing, really amazing. It really shows the concern of the American people,” said wounded Master Sgt. Daniel Barnes, bilateral amputation.

The four-story, 60,000-square-foot center was designed for wounded warriors like Barnes. Equipped with the latest rehabilitation technologies, it is the dream of a potential athlete. The facility includes an indoor running track, a shooting range, a swimming pool, a two-story climbing wall, a prosthetics center and a computer-based rehabilitation environment known as CAREN.
The environment consists of a dome with a 4-meter platform and screen that simulates everything from a city sidewalk to a day at the lake so patients can improve their gait and balance skills. This unit is one of nine in the world and the only one in the United States.
"What you see in front of you is a monument built with the donations of 600,000 Americans," Fisher said. "This is a monument not only to the men and women and their families who will come here, but also to the generosity of our citizens and their love for those who serve."
The center will initially serve amputees and burn patients affected by the global war on terror, but it is hoped it will expand to include retirees, family members and veterans.

"This is my son (Ken Fisher) and my commitment and our mission," Fisher said. "We will continue this as long as necessary. Our only wish is that such a place will one day become a garage."
The two new Fisher Houses bring the total number of employees to four. Fisher Houses serve as a home away from home for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers.
The 21-room houses are built in the newer Fisher House style, measuring 16,800 square feet rather than 5,000-plus square feet. Families will be able to live in comfort and style while caring for their loved ones at BAMC in homes that look more like a Malibu mansion than temporary military housing. Each home has a kitchen that even Marty Stewart would love, a formal dining room, multiple living rooms, and elegant bedrooms equipped with DVD/VCR systems and flat screen televisions.
"What a privilege it is to support military families," said Ken Fisher, chairman of the Fisher House Foundation.

Pace echoed that sentiment. "I thank the families - the families of the fallen, the families of the wounded; you give in ways that only people who have not walked in your shoes can imagine.
